Responsible Gambling: Limits, Self-Exclusion and Help in Australia

Free, confidential help is available 24 hours a day on 1800 858 858. This page covers the warning signs, the limits you can set, what BetStop actually covers, and where to get support in your state.

Pokies are built to return less than they take. That is the mathematics of the product, not bad luck, and the only sustainable way to play is with money you have already decided you can lose.

If you need to talk to someone right now: Gambling Help Online is free, confidential and staffed 24 hours a day on 1800 858 858. Web chat and email counselling are at gamblinghelponline.org.au. In immediate distress, call Lifeline on 13 11 14, or 000.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

Problem gambling rarely announces itself. It shows up as a pattern, usually one other people notice first:

  • Chasing losses — depositing again to win back what just went, rather than because you planned to play.
  • Spending more than you decided to, repeatedly, and moving the line afterwards.
  • Gambling with money meant for something else — rent, bills, groceries — or borrowing or using credit to fund play.
  • Hiding it: clearing history, minimising amounts, lying about time spent or losses taken.
  • Playing to escape stress, boredom, loneliness or low mood rather than for entertainment.
  • Restlessness or irritability when you try to cut back, and relief when you start again.
  • Sleep, work or relationships slipping, or repeating arguments about money.

One of these on its own is a prompt to pay attention. Three or four together is a reason to act now.

Tools at the operator level

Most casinos, including the offshore sites reviewed here, carry responsible-gambling settings in the account area. They work because they act before you are in the moment:

  • Deposit limits — daily, weekly or monthly caps. Increases usually take effect only after a cooling-off period; reductions apply immediately. Set the cap you would be comfortable losing every month.
  • Loss and wager limits, where offered, which cap the damage rather than the top-ups.
  • Session reminders and time limits — a clock on screen is unglamorous and surprisingly effective.
  • Cooling-off / time-out — a short lock of 24 hours to several weeks, usually reversible only when it expires.
  • Self-exclusion — a long-term account closure, typically six months to permanent. Request it in writing and keep the reply.

Be realistic about these tools with an offshore operator: no Australian regulator supervises whether they are honoured, an excluded account at one brand does not close its sister sites, and nothing stops a new account elsewhere. They are a speed bump, not a wall. Our guide on how to self-exclude and get help covers the steps.

BetStop — what it covers and what it does not

BetStop is Australia’s National Self-Exclusion Register, run under the Interactive Gambling Act and administered on behalf of ACMA. You register once, free, at betstop.gov.au, for a period from three months to a lifetime. Every licensed Australian online and phone wagering provider must then refuse to open or operate an account for you and stop sending you marketing.

The boundary matters, so plainly: BetStop applies to licensed Australian wagering services — sports and race betting regulated here. It does not reach offshore online casinos, because those operators hold no Australian licence and sit outside the register entirely. Register anyway if betting is part of the picture; it simply will not close an offshore pokies account. That has to be done with the operator directly and reinforced with the tools below.

Blocks that do not rely on the operator

  • Bank gambling blocks. Every major Australian bank now offers a switch that declines gambling merchant transactions on your card, usually with a 48–72 hour delay before it can be turned off. Look under card controls in the app.
  • Blocking software on your devices, which stops gambling sites and apps loading. Some services are free; several state help services will fund a licence.
  • Remove the shortcuts — delete apps, clear saved passwords and payment details, unsubscribe from operator marketing. Friction reduces impulse play.
  • Hand over control of the money. A trusted person holding card details, or a separate account with no gambling access, does more than any digital tool.

If you are worried about someone else

You can ring 1800 858 858 about another person’s gambling and get advice for yourself. What helps: talk when nobody is mid-session, be specific about the effect on you rather than arguing about willpower, avoid paying off gambling debts directly, and protect joint accounts. Gam-Anon exists because living with someone else’s gambling deserves its own support.

The house rules we would ask you to keep

  • You must be 18 or over to gamble in Australia. Never let a minor use your account.
  • Set a deposit limit before your first deposit, not after your first bad night.
  • Treat losses as the price of entertainment, and never as something to win back.
  • Never gamble with borrowed money, credit or funds committed elsewhere.
  • Do not gamble while drinking, upset, or unable to sleep.
  • Take the payout when you withdraw; putting it straight back is how a win becomes a loss.
  • Remember there is no strategy, system or “due” machine: RTP and volatility explain why.

Offshore casinos are not licensed in Australia: no local regulator, no Australian complaints body and no consumer guarantee behind your balance — the position is set out on our legal hub and in how we work. Play only what you can afford to lose, and if that line has moved, call 1800 858 858.
